Movie Review: Rent
An unconventional and modern musical interpretation of issues in our society -- AIDS, drugs, homelessness and homosexuality -- as well as love, friendship, freedom and justice. Rosario Dawson plays the character "Mimi", who is a nightclub dancer and a drug addict. Her performance, though some too liberating, is truly note-worthy. Plus, she has a great voice ;)
Words and music are very memorable, especially the two songs that I played twice while watching the film. Here is my favorite part of the first...
And of the second...
Five hundred twenty-five thousand
Six hundred minutes!
Five hundred twenty-five thousand
Journeys to plan.
Five hundred twenty-five thousand
Six hundred minutes
How do you measure the life
Of a woman or a man?
In truths that she learned,
Or in times that he cried.
In bridges he burned,
Or the way that she died.
It's time now to sing out,
Tho' the story never ends
Let's celebrate
Remember a year in the life of friends
Remember the love!
Seasons of love!
If you love musicals, watch it ;) Definitely a must-see.

The heart may freeze or it can burn
The pain will ease if I can learn
There is no future, there is no past
I live this moment as my last
There's only us, there's only this
Forget regret, or life is yours to miss
No other road, no other way
No day but today
The pain will ease if I can learn
There is no future, there is no past
I live this moment as my last

My friends and I were grumbling at the lack of ambient sounds of HP1, a movie directed by Chris Columbus, the same director of Rent. When Rent came along, we thought he couldn't go wrong with a musical! *evil laugh* The first boom of vocal chords heralding the number of minutes in a year: 525,600 minutes -- we could no longer forget that now, haha! -- was stunning. I like this movie, though it made me cringe at some scenes, which required a tad open-mindedness, hehe. The whole cast sings exceptionally well. Beautifully crafted. Chris Columbus, thumbs up! Jonathan Larson, you're a writer par excellence! Mojo, I knew you'd like this movie. :D
