Songkran @ Kanchanaburi

I've been living in this country for years but never have I participated in the Songkran festivities. Getting wet in the middle of the street was not my idea of fun, so I had been avoiding it by flying back home. But this year, my friends and I decided to witness the highlights of Songkran -- not in the city, but in a wonderful province called Kanchanaburi.

It took us less than a week to plan the getaway. We were able to make a reservation even at the last minute, thanks to the wonders of the internet. Hotel/guesthouse bookings in provinces are usually full during this time of the year in Thailand, since most people from Bangkok leave the city for the holidays. Check out Sam's House. This was where we stayed for 2 nights.

Day 1: We were greeted by splashes of water, left and right! The songtew driver even tried to avoid the *busy* streets so we could arrive at the guesthouse safe and dry. As we enjoyed the moment, we wondered where all the water was coming from, because they were using an awful amount of water by the minute. We found out the next day that they pumped out water from the river Kwai.

Sam's House was just as we expected. Well, to cut the story short, the website pictures are the same as the actual place, hehe. We just checked in, dropped our bags in the room, then headed for the bikes. We pedalled our way across town while getting spattered by cold water and powder all over. There's no point avoiding the wet folks, they sure know how to hunt the dry ones down. We rode our bikes till sunset, right when the splashes stopped. That was truly a ride to remember.

Rain came, so we raced back to the guesthouse and had beers and chips at the back porch while waiting for dinnertime. There was something weird about dinner, though. For some reason, there was cauliflower and carrots in our tom yum... hmmm. Well, fortunately enough, we eat ANYTHING when hungry, so never mind about that. When the rain stopped, we headed for the massage parlor to relax.

Day 2: It was an early start. Got up at 7, then had breakfast at 7.30 while waiting for the tour group to pick us up. We had the day planned out for us. The tour included: swimming and trekking at Erawan waterfalls; elephant trekking and bamboo rafting; trip to Kra Sae cave (or rather *a glimpse of*) and the wooden railway bridge; train ride on the Death Railway; and, quick tour to the bridge on river Kwai. I liked bamboo rafting the most, not only due the fabulous scenery, but because my friend was having the time of her life with this mouth-watering hunk. (Well, she just sat beside him and had a little talk on the raft, in case you're curious *wink wink*)

The 400-meter hike to Erawan falls was a bit of a disaster. The national park was packed with people, and we had to climb really, really high to get a decent space of water and rocks. The water was cool, and the boulders of rocks were slippery, and two toes on my right foot are now swelling like chorizo de bilbao because I slipped and hit the darn thing. Ok, exagge. But my toes do hurt... *sniff*

Night came, and the rest is history... (clue: something to do with booze and whatever-occurs-in-this-room-stays-in-this-room kind of thing) Haha! Well, it was a fun night. Thanks to my friends, with whom I shared some good laughs till 2.30 in the morning.

Day 3: Woke up at 9.30 am, packed, checked out at 12.30, had lunch near the bus terminal at 1.10, got on the bus at 1.50 then headed back to Bangkok. We arrived 2 hours later, then went straight home to enjoy the leftover sinigang and adobo, with matching pusoy-dos.

A Celebration of Love

I can't help but share a wonderful entry a friend's boyfriend posted, which I recently found while browsing though friendster the other day. It is several months old, yet it has given me great pleasure to read it. Read Making An Offer She Cannot Refuse.

Sometimes we wonder if certain guys still exist. Well, they most certainly do. To Micah and Miren, as you start your journey together as husband and wife, may you continue to walk by faith and celebrate love for the rest of your lives.

The Legend of the Christmas Prayer

Once upon a time, at Christmas time, long ago, a man who had a big heart, but little money, dreamt he could give his friends endless riches. When he awoke, the dream kept running through his mind, over and over. Finally, he asked himself: "If I could give my friends anything, what would I give?" He smiled as he began to think of all the wondrous things he could buy for them. But then he thought: "I'm a happy man, yet I have none of those things." And he began to think that perhaps real wealth could not be measured in riches. Perhaps there were gifts of greater value than the things money could buy. In the still of the night, he pondered these things and thought of Christmas and what it meant to him.Taking out his quill, he began to write on a parchment scroll:

On the first day of Christmas,

I pray for you JOY, in abundance and laughter, for joy cures our ills and joy makes our spirits soar. My servants shall sing for joy of heart. Isaiah 65:14

On the second day of Christmas,

I pray for you a SIGH, when you need one,for a sigh clears the heart as a cough clears the throat, and with a sigh comes acceptance of what we cannot change. Let all those rejoice who put their trust in You. Psalms 5:11

One the third day of Christmas,

I pray for you TEARS, when you need them, for tears clear the eyes to see the stars and cleanse the soul to let healing begin. You number my wanderings; put my tears into Your bottle. Psalm 56:8

On the fourth day of Christmas,

I pray for you SERENITY, for fights and wars start in individual breasts and that is where they must end. What does the LORD require of you but to do justly, to love mercy, and to walk humbly with your God? Micah 6:8

On the fifth day of Christmas,

I pray for you WISDOM, for our priceless gift is the gift of choice and we should use it well everyday, in word and deed. He who heeds the word will find good. Proverbs 16:20

On the sixth day of Christmas,

I pray for you PATIENCE, for most troubles pass if we wait them out, and success comes with persistence. Rest in the LORD, and wait patiently for Him. Psalm 37:7

On the seventh day of Christmas,

I pray for you COURAGE, for there may be many pitfalls and dangers ahead and problems can only be solved when they are faced. Be strong and of good courage, do not fear nor be afraid... For the LORD your God, He is the One who goes with you. Deuteronomy 31:6

On the eight day of Christmas,

I pray for you COMPASSION, for we cannot help others until we understand them, and we cannot understand them until we walk in their shoes. Execute true justice, show mercy and compassion everyone to his brother. Zechariah 7:9

On the ninth day of Christmas,

I pray for you a WILLINGNESS to work, for work turns dreams to reality whether the dreams are ours or belong to those we can help. Do you see a man who excels in his work? He will stand before kings. Proverbs 22:29

On the tenth day of Christmas,

I pray UNWAVERING FAITH, for faith shapes our morals and our destiny and draws us closer to God. The just shall live by his faith. Habakkuk 2:4

On the eleventh day of Christmas,

I pray for you a Mind full of HOPE, For hope determines our attitudes, sets our goals and Creates our Ideals. You are my hope, O Lord God, You are my trust. Psalm 71:5

On the twelfth day of Christmas,

I pray for you a heart so full of LOVE, that everyday you must give some away to those whose paths you cross. Now abide faith, hope, love, these three; but the greatest of these is love. 1 Corinthians 13:13

And with each prayer, the man realized he was not giving a gift at all, but hoping that his friends would find the gifts they already had within them. Each time he wrote a prayer, a marvelous thing happened. It seemed to him that the prayer, although offered for his friends, remained in his heart and produced in him the very thing he prayed for them. The man copied his scroll and sent the Christmas prayer to special friends, just as I am doing for YOU now, and that is where the legend of the Christmas prayer is lost in the mists of time. The man was never heard of again but, over the years, the Christmas Prayer began to appear all over the world.

People on obscure villages and big cities would receive at Christmas time a copy of the scroll from a friend. And so the wonder multiplied, until the story finally reached YOU. May you, too feel the warmth and enjoy the riches of the Christmas Prayer.

Turning 26

There's nothing greater than spending your birthday with special people in your life. Being away from home during such occasions could cause tremendous home-sickness, but yesterday, it felt like my family was here.

Mama and Papa, thank you for the 12-midnight call. I know it was really an effort for you to stay awake late at night. And knowing that you rarely call overseas, I am deeply touched. To Ate Jenny and Francois (plus Diane and Tristan, who were already asleep), who called me at 1.30am, and to Jon and Jia, who, even miles away from each other, managed to send their greetings together, thank you. And to Inchi, who coordinated a very memorable evening, threw me an exquisite dinner party (for 3, hehe) at the Les Nympheas Restaurant (Imperial Queen’s Park Hotel) while serenading us with her music, and also granted special requests on the piano from 1 to 2am. You’re the best, thank you!

To Sally, who’s been there through thick, and thick, and thin, thank you for the gift of friendship… oh yes, plus the comfy cushion. Weeeeeeee!

And to all my friends who didn’t fail to express their greetings, thank you! I miss you all.

Looking forward to a great year ahead…. :D
